The Wonderful World of Willows
Vermont Willow Nursery
Do It Yourself Living Willow Structures
Willows are unique in that they will root no matter how a long a cutting is used; a long cutting is a rod and they can be used to make living structures. Just stick them in the ground in a preset pattern, then tie them together to form the structure.
The fresher/greener the rod, the better chance for survival. Let us know if deer, elk etc. are a problem in your area.
For 2020 we have changed these kits so we don't have to cut/ship polyethylene and staples; we ask you to buy locally.
We send detailed instructions about what you need to buy and exactly how to plant and tie the rods in your structure.
This Harlequin Fedge was created in late winter 2012. It is 5ft high and 20ft long.
We used S. myrsinifolia 'Blackskin' for its showy winter stems and shiny dark green foliage.
This tunnel/arch was built in June 2013 from 14ft rods! We can't ship this length of rod, so the tunnels we offer are narrower and shorter; unless you pick them up at the nursery!
Our simple dome was built in May 2013. At right: the same dome in early October. Our autumns are always this beautiful! Lucky us!

The arch above and at right require longer rods that we can ship, but you can plant our 96in rods and wait a year for them to grow before tying them together at the top!
Please order tunnel kits and let us know
whether you want to make an arch out of them!
If you live near enough to pick them up, then you may select whatever lengths we have available at the time!

A simple arch in the UK

This willow structure was created by Woodside Services in Gloucestershire UK and is similar to what you can expect from our Willow TeePee Kit.
Created by Steve Fuller in the UK, this living willow structure
is a hybrid between a dome and a teepee. Steve used longer rods than we can ship!

Chicken Shelters in the garden of friend and customer Don Statham in New York State.
As you can see the chickens eat the willows on the sides, but the roofs are intact to hide these lovely ladies from hungry hawks!

TIP
If you would like a higher or wider structure, here's what to do: Plant the rods vertically and allow them to grow as tall as you need. Then tie them together in 1-2 years!

Tunnels and an open-faced Dome created by Clauss Brothers with our Salix miyabeana for a wonderful new playground for hospitalized Kids.
These photos were taken a few weeks after planting and all the rods are producing new leaves. Hopefully we will get more photos as these structures mature.
